Game #1 story

As I said before this time, we got together to work on a game. We’ve never built a game together as a team and we have always wanted to do something like this. To be more precise, Teo had been telling me he’d wanted to create a smartphone game to put his mind off webdesing a little… Even though it has always been his dream to make his living as a game-dev… That didn’t go unnoticed, and my brain started to play with this idea of a simple game we could embark on. Nothing too heavy, something to try out the whole process of game-dev…

After a few weeks of not thinking about the game, the game eventually came to me :-) To be more specific, I rehashed a memory I forgot long time ago. I remembered this game I used to play at high school with my desk-mate Peter (here in Slovakia, the students generally sit in pairs except at Uni). He was  boy with a brilliant mathematical brain and we played hundreds of games together, to a point I just could not play any more since there was no way I could beat him at it :-) I have no recollection of where I learned the game from, but we had a great deal of fun with it back in the day. I am hoping to get in touch with him during working on this project since I found out he mastered at the Uni with a thesis on AI strategy in games (no wonder I wasn’t able to kick his ass). There is just no better person to help us with advanced AI when it comes to this game, than Peter himself…

Hokej

In our days, back in the high school, we used to call this game Hockey. However it is a strategic versus game,  the field you play it on, looks more like a hockey field. Moreover given the  rules of this game suggested to call it ‘hockey’. Besides Slovakia, my home country,  is very proud of its perpetual and abundant tradition and heritage of Slovak ice hockey :)

So there I was… Hockey hitting my mind in the precise moment it should have. The instance it came to me, I knew it was the right game for a smartphone platform which is still, hopefully not out yet. Besides, it’s a perfect one to begin with. Simple play field, simple graphics, simple rules, great deal of fun and even multiplayer… What more could I ask for?!

We met with Teo and Fusky in our favorite pub. I gave Teo a pen and since I brought a play-field with me, we started playing the game right away. Since there are only very few rules we were able to play few games straightaway. There and then we all put our heads together and agreed to work on this game. Later on, Ondrej joined our team and just like Teo and Fusky, I did not explain anything to him, we just got down to business and got to play a few games.

And once again we got to the very point, where I came with an idea to my fellows who eventually said YES to me and that is precisely, how the story began…
